Portrait of an anti-semite October 29, 2010

Today's blog entry is another portrait, Marcvdb, very angry, very resentful, made a previous claim to have resided in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. Crown Heights is quite a controversial area because of the three-day riot that occurred in August 1991. The community was and is majority West Indian and African American and has a large minority of Jews. The riots began on August 19, 1991 after the child of two Guyanese immigrants was accidentally struck and killed by an automobile in the motorcade of a prominent Hasidic rabbi. During the riot an Orthodox Jew was killed. The riot unveiled long simmering tensions between Crown Heights' black and Jewish communities, had an impact on the 1993 mayoral race and ultimately led to a successful outreach program between black and Jewish leaders that helped improve race relations in the city.

October 29th update: My post eventually got posted, and at the end of last night had 6 faves on it, with one flag. As of this morning the post with all the replies disappeared. I'm trying to repost it now, and I am sending a query to the moderators as to why they are abusing their privileges.

Doud Kuttab is a Palestinian blogger on the Huffingtonpost. Today, he addresses a long pet peeve of mine, Palestinian reference to the Israelis as Yehuds instead of Israeli, or Israeli Jews.

My response to the article has been rejected four times now even though it violated no terms of service. I don't know why it's rejected, they wont tell me. Here is what I would like to say:

Nothing screams louder in the *delegitimization* of an entire nation than refering to people as Yehuds. It is as if Israel does not exist. The minute that the Palestinians begin calling Israelis, Izraili instead of Yehud, is the minute that peace becomes a reality.

As to the reasons why Israel is THE Jewish state? I leave you with this tidbit:

On November 29, 1947 in NY the General Assembly of the United Nations debated the UNSCOP proposals. During the debate, the Soviet representative, Andrei Gromyko, astonished the Zionists representatives by his warm endorsement of their desire for statehood. "The Jewish people had been closely linked with Palestine for a considerable period in history. As a result of the war, the Jews as a people have suffered more than any other people. The total number of the Jewish population who perished at the hands of the Nazi executioners is estimated at approximately six million. The Jewish people were therefore striving to create a State of their own, and it would be unjust to deny them that right'.

When the vote was taken, the partition proposal was accepted by thirty-three votes to thirteen, with ten abstentions. Britain was among those states which abstained. All six independent Arab states voted against the plan, as did four Muslim states- Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey - and 3 other states, Cuba, Greece and India. Among those in favor of partition were the US, Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland and Sweden.
